To Dance or Not to Dance?
Buenos Aires is a massive city, we have spent the last 3 days on foot, only taking public transport once, and have only seen a small section of the city. We woke up Sunday morning walked a few blocks down calle Independencia and smack into the longest street fair that any of us have ever witnessed. Streaching for well over a mile, the fair ran through the heart of the neighborhood of San Telmo. Most of the offerings were kitschy gifts, but we did manage to find a few great works from local craftsman and artists. We all bought something and generally marveled at the thousands of people that packed the fairs’ walkway. We walked down to the fairs end in front of the Casa Rosada where the president of Argentina, Mrs. Kirchner resides. In fact today should prove to be an interesting one, as Kirchner is supposed to make a ruling on a highly unpopular tax she has levied against the farmers of the country, who prior had been making record profits from the demand of China and others for their food imports. Kirchner thought the government should see a big piece of this windfall and raised the taxes from an already high 40% to 60%. So depending on how she rules today we might see a riot or two…
